Cisco 2106 Wireless LAN Controller

I'm an avid fan of ebay and purchasing used network equipment there for me to learn/study. Several months ago I bought a Cisco 2106 wlc, with an attached note that the it would not boot, bad compact flash card. Once I received the unit I spend hours looking over the web trying to find a solution. Being stuck at the grub prompt, did give you options, but you cannot load a .aes via tftp, as it is encrypted. Tried putting the the compact flash card into different Cisco gear, with no luck. Most of the posts pointed to putting on a TAC case, but I do not have support on the hardware. At this point I went to ebay to purchase a second device that works, yes I had to pay a premium for that. But with the new wlc I was able to swap the compact flash card and prove that there is nothing wrong with either device, just the compact flash. Here are the steps that I used to make both compact flash cards working:

  • Went to Best buy to purchase a USB to compact flash card adapter
  • Build a Ubunto 12.04 LTS server onto a spare laptop
  • Ubuntu was able to see the working compact flash just fine
  • Used dd to extract the entire content
  • Replace the good compact flash with the bad compact flash
  • Used dd to dump the image extracted two steps above
  • Done
Now I have two working WLCs.
